According to statistics released just last week by the United States Postal Service, attacks by dogs on letter carriers are up substantially in the Washington, DC area.
The article that quoted the statistics went on to say that "The USPS has taken extra steps to help curtail the problem, including sending out mailers to residents urging them to keep their dogs inside and away from mail carriers."
In another article it was reported that close to 5600 attacks on postal carriers occurred in 2011 costing the government close to $2 million. That article went on to add "If a letter carrier feels threatened by a dog, mail will not be delivered to that address and a supervisor will attempt to contact the homeowner."
Well-recognized techniques for avoiding a dog attack are to walk slowly away if you see a stray dog and never approach a strange dog. Above all do not try to pet a dog while he is eating or drinking. If you see more than one dog, avoid them for sure because they have a pack mentality that makes them more aggressive.
On an annual basis, close to 5 million dog attacks are reported with 1 million of those requiring hospitalization of the victims. No one knows how many dog attacks go unreported.
Many people don't realize this but postal carriers are all issued pepper sprays for use against dog attacks. The number and severity of dog attacks nationwide seems to be going up especially against letter carriers. The Postal Service keeps closer track of this than any other agency.
Here are four options that can be used as self-defense against dog attacks. One of them will work well for you.
1. The most common defense against a dog attack has been a specially formulated pepper spray by Mace brand as the first choice.
2. There is also a product called the dog chaser that sends out a high frequency sound that is very uncomfortable for dogs and can only be heard by dogs. Both of these are ineffective against breeds like dobermans, pit bulls and German shepherds-the more aggressive breeds.
Citizens are looking for other answers to what appears to be a growing problem in the United States. When they sought our advice we recommended two other items.
3. The third option was a telescopic stun baton that made an intimidating sound when it was activated. That seemed to scare dogs away in and of itself. If that didn't work, then the 1,000,000 volts did.
4. The fourth option that worked was a Pepper Gun. It shoots out full strength 10% solution of oleoresin capsicum, the main ingredient in all pepper sprays, up to 25 feet away. It has enough spray in its replaceable cartridges for seven shots of 25 feet each. Obviously it is also good against human assailants, but it is particularly effective against dog attacks.
