The Benefits of Rawhide Dog Chews

Your dog will instinctively chew to help keep its teeth and molars clean. Unfortunately, this can mean that your dog or puppy will literally chew anything around the house. To discourage this destructive and expensive behaviour, dog chews are an excellent substitute for your socks, shoes and even furniture!
Rawhide dog chews are made from natural rawhide such as cow hide or sometimes pig skin, which is first tanned and then dried, then shaped into the rawhide chews your dog loves. They don't just come in the traditional bone shape; they now come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes such as twists, knots, rings and cigars. Pigs ears are one of the most popular dog chews and can be used as a treat or reward to encourage good behaviour.
Rawhide chews can help in a number of ways:
  • Helps to help keep your dog's teeth and gums healthy
  • Improved oral health reduces the number of trips to the doggy dentist
  • Mentally stimulates and entertains your dog for hours - no more bored dogs
  • Relieves puppy teething pain
  • Healthy treat to reward good behaviour
  • Suitable for all dogs, regardless of age or size, including puppies
Regular chewing on rawhide treats can help improve dental health. The saliva that is produced makes the rawhide dog chew softer, releasing collagen from the rawhide which helps to dissolve plaque and scrape away food deposits - acting like a toothbrush. Food deposits are removed from around the teeth which reduces the risk of bad breath. As a result, the risk of dental problems and expensive trips to the vet are reduced.
These rawhide chews stimulate harmless fun and entertain your dog for hours. This is especially important for older dogs who may not be as active, but still need to remain mentally alert. Springer Spaniels, Retrievers, German Pointers, Weimaraners and other working dogs, that are only used during the shooting season, can often become bored if they are not mentally stimulated or physically exercised enough. This boredom can lead to destructive behaviour around your home. Playing with your dog a few times a day, exercising them regularly and providing them with toys and rawhide dog chews will keep them stimulated and out of mischief.
Rawhide bones can help relieve a puppy's teething pain. This normally starts from 3 - 7 months of age. Chewing stimulates the growth of adult teeth.
It's always recommended that you supervise your dog or puppy with any dog chew or toy - especially puppies - to avoid them from biting off and swallowing large pieces which might choke them. Compressed rawhide dog chews are especially useful for aggressive chewers as they can last up to five times longer than regular rawhide chews. They are made from layers of rawhide pressed together to form various shapes including bones, rings, twists and cigars. As they are much more compressed than regular chews, they will deter your dog from biting off and swallowing small bits of rawhide.
