Keeping Your Dog Healthy: Nutrition......

They say the way to a man's heart is through his food. We love to eat and woes betide anyone who dares get in the way of good food. At the end of the day however, good food isn't just something exploratory for the senses, it is also a way for us to keep ourselves healthy. Nutrition in fact, is high on the list for what keeps us healthy and what gives us the strength and capability to stay on top of our health.
For our dogs, nutrition is also important. Just as with humans, dogs need the right nutrition to keep them going. Food provides important fuel to keep your dog active and it also ensures that he doesn't find it difficult to go about his daily activities. The problem with humans when it comes to food for their dogs is that they often forget that their dogs have their own type of diet and they forget that although they may treat and love their dogs like humans, they have specific needs when it comes to their nutrition.
A lot of humans are guilty of overfeeding their dogs. The normal human assumption is that a dog will stop eating the moment that he is full. Although some dogs may actually do this, a lot of dogs are really not able to tell the difference. Keep a dish full of food in front of your dog and regardless of whether he is hungry or not, he is going to end up eating the food. It is just innate for dogs to do that. You should check with your vet to see what the recommended serving size is for your dog, regardless of whether this is regular food or dog food.
Something else that humans forget about dogs, is that they shouldn't be fed human food. Plenty of pet owners feed their dogs chocolates and ice cream and even give their dogs burgers, fries and other human food. The problem is that a dog's digestive system is relatively different from a human's. Their stomachs can't handle all of the stuff that humans put into their system. You could be dramatically affecting your dog's life and life span by providing these types of food.
Of course, that being said, not all human food is bad for dogs. Dogs are animals that need a high calorie intake with a good protein intake. In layman's terms that means they need meat with their diets. You can definitely feed your dogs dog food but in that respect, you do still have to make sure that you stick to the boundaries of the high protein diet for your dogs. In addition, studies have shown that grain based diets don't work well for dogs. These types of food cause dry and flaky skin and can prove to be bad for the dog. That's why it again pays to check the dog food label.
In terms of nutrition, the truth of the matter is that not all dogs react the same way. It really does depend on breed and size and that's why you still have to check with your vet to understand the best diet for your dog.
